Maps - Rodanthe, Outer Banks
In so many ways, America
begins on North Carolina's Outer Banks!
The land of beginnings, some call
it. This is where England first attempted to colonize the Americas, with
disastrous results for the 'lost' Colony. The Wright Brothers defied
gravity from a sandy dune not far from the windswept beach and brought
mankind into the aviation age.
The American government, determined to protect this fragile
environment, set aside much of these islands as the country's first
National Seashore. Cape Hatteras National Seashore now preserves some of
the finest beaches in the country. But the Outer Banks are much more than
a living lesson in history and ecology. These sandy barrier islands are a
special place where time seems to slow. Where breathtaking beauty
envelops the spirit and sets it soaring, luring visitors back year after
year.

There
are seven villages of Hatteras Island (Rodanthe,Waves, Salvo, Avon,
Buxton, Frisco and Hatters) that share much in common and are connected today by
Highway 12.
The entire northern end of Hatteras Island was once known as Chicamacomico, but in 1874 the postal
service changed the name to Rodanthe, perhaps seeking something easier to
spell. However, by the early 1900s, three distinct villages had become
established in the Rodanthe area --North Rodanthe,
South Rodanthe, and Clark. As the postal sections were subdivided, the
northernmost village kept the name "Rodanthe," while the others were
assigned new names "Waves" and "Salvo".

Rodanthe is located on the
northern end of Hatteras Island, the first village below Oregon Inlet and
The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
